Turkish fighter jets have bombed dozens of Kurdish separatist targets in northern Iraq, la ocal television has reported.
Some 20 warplanes hit around 50 positions of the Kurdistan Workers'
Party (PKK), in the ZAP-Khakurk region on Thursday, Turkish broadcaster
NTV said.
The army has not yet confirmed the raid and there was no immediate news of casualties.
Anita Mcnaught, Al Jazeera's correspondent in the Turkish capital
Ankara, said: "We understand that the Turkish armed forces were made
aware of the movements of a significant number of rebels and decided to
launch the strikes to pre-empt their arrival in Turkey. (Suite)
While much attention has been paid to the recent tension between the
Obama White House and the Israeli government over settlements, the
Pentagon and the Israeli military have just concluded another large
arms deal. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports the US will
give Israel three new Hercules-J transport aircraft, produced by
Lockheed Martin, at a cost of $250 million. Israel is also negotiating
a possible $3 billion deal to purchase Lockheed F-35 war planes.

Unified Combatant Commands:
Operational Control of the U.S. combat forces is assigned to the
nation's Unified Combat Commands. A Unified Combatant Command is
composed of forces from two or more services, has a broad and
continuing mission, and is normally organized on a geographical basis.
The number of unified combatant commands is not fixed by law or
regulation and may vary from time to time. Combat commands are
currently divided between six regional commands (AFRICOM, NORTHCOM, SOUTHCOM, PACOM, EUCOM, CENTCOM)
and four functional commands (SOCOM,
STRATCOM, TRANSCOM, JFCOM)
